Data from IDC and comScore continue to support that more people in America have switched to smartphones in recent months. comScore reported that there were 110 million people in America in June 2012 have used a smartphone to communicate with friends, sent texting messages, and watched videos via mobile. The growth rate of owning smartphones during the past three months (March to June) was at 4%.
The world’s largest search engine Google and its powerful mobile operating system called Android continued to grab market share in America. Android’s share was at 51.6% in June, compared to 51.0% share in March, or an increase of 0.6% share.
The world’s most valuable and Silicon Valley-based company Apple’s share jumped 1.7% to 32.4% share in June, compared to 30.7% share in March. Many smartphone buyers are still waiting for the next generation Apple iPhone (the "New iPhone") which is slated for release in early October 2012.
Smartphone pioneer and Canadian-based company Research In Motion (RIM) and its popular operating system called BlackBerry remained at third place. BlackBerry captured 10.7% share in June, compared to 12.3% share in March, or a drop of 1.6% share.
The world’s largest software company Microsoft and its newest operating system called Windows Phone captured only 3.8% share in June, compared to 3.9% share in March, or a drop of 0.1% share. As the software giant will release the next operating system Windows 8 in October 26, Microsoft will gain some momentum into the next few months.
