South Korea-based Samsung is the New King of Wireless Handsets in the world, surpassed Nokia for the first time in the first quarter of 2012

Samsung, the maker of Galaxy series smartphones and tablets is now The New King of Wireless Handsets in the world.  The company’s headquarter is located in South Korea.  Starting the New Year of 2012, Samsung has overtaken Nokia as the world’s number one handset vendor.   Nokia was the number one phone hardware maker since 1998, but now has lost its crown to Samsung.  This assessment was given to Samsung by Strategy Analytics, as the research firm published a report with a title “Samsung Overtakes Nokia to Become World’s Largest Handset Vendor in Q1 2012” which was distributed on April 27, 2012.

According to the report, phone hardware shipments increased about 3.3% over one year ago and reached 368 million units from January to March 2012 quarter.  Samsung’s market share was at about 25.4%, while its closest competitor Nokia captured about 22.5% share.  Samsung shipped about 93.5 million handsets worldwide, while Nokia shipped about 82.7 million handsets.

Silicon Valley-based company Apple is now the number three phone vendor in the world.  The iPhone maker captured 9.5% market share, and shipped about 35.1 million smartphones worldwide.  Apple launched an upgraded version iPhone 4S in October 2011, and is now planning to launch a new iPhone 5 in the Fall of 2012.  With the upcoming release of a new smartphone, the company could move up its third spot to the second spot soon.
