Internet adoption in America: the ratio of adults who do not connect to the information superhighway is 1 in 5 adults, as factors hindered the gaps including age, education, and household income

The latest study compiled survey data of 2,260 adults age 18 and older, and was conducted via landline and cell phone from July 25-August 26, 2011.  Based on the survey results, Pew Internet & American Life Project published a report and found there were still 1 in 5 adults in America did not connect to the Internet in 2011. 

Internet adoptions in America increased very fast since the mid-1990s during where AOL was the pioneer of bringing Internet access to Americans homes. According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project’s latest study, the adoption rate for adult Internet users in 1995 was 14% and then stopped at around 73% to 79% in 2005 to the recent years.

There are many factors hindered the gaps in Internet adoption, as one in five adults who are still not online today.  The Pew’s report found age, education, and household income contributed as predictors of Internet use in American homes.  Pew’s report found that minorities groups, poorer households, and seniors were the top factors contributing to gaps in internet adoption. 

The study found that households who earned below $30,000 per year are usually less likely to connect to internet.  Other groups of the late adopters included senior citizens who only speak Spanish with less than a high school diploma.
