More America’s pay-television customers cancelled their subscriptions in recent years and had moved to online services to watch box office films and popular TV shows. According to the Convergence Consulting report (in .pdf) that was published early this week with a title “The Battle for the North American (US/Canada) Couch Potato: Online and Traditional TV and Movie Distribution” (April 2012), about 2.65 million subscribers to traditional cable (i.e., Comcast, Time Warner) and satellite TV (i.e., DirecTV) services had canceled their accounts since 2008 and had moved to web-based services, such as Netflix and Hulu.
According to the Toronto-based Convergence Consulting Group report, within one year of 2011, there were 1.05 million dropouts from traditional cable and satellite TV services. Moreover, Convergence Consulting’s researchers estimated that there will be about 930,000 customers to cancel their cable and satellite TV services in 2012. The accumulated cancellations by the end of 2012 will be around 3.58 million accounts.

While it is still cheaper to wait for some programming to come to Netflix, more of the premium channels are preventing their shows from EVER going to Netflix, like HBO and Starz. This puts more pressure on subscribers like me, who watch shows such as Game of Thrones and enjoy talking about it after it airs. Even though I get a discount for programming as a DISH employee, the value I get from my Blockbuster @Home subscription (which I pay for) streaming VOD through my Hopper whole-home DVR is invaluable. The convenience and selection alone is reason enough to keep my service, even at full price.
