America’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urges farmers and ranchers to cut the use of antibiotic drugs in food-animal production, as sales of antibiotic-free meat and poultry continue to go up in recent years

Last week FDA recommended farmers, ranchers and agricultural production companies to gradually reduce using antibiotic drugs in food-animal production.  The agency was in the stage of recommending voluntary program but not requiring meat producers to stop the use of antibiotics.

In recent years, several medical studies have revealed that the use of antibiotic drugs in meat and poultry production could affect human health.  Researchers have warned regulators that the use of antibiotic drugs in food-animal production has contributed to a surge in drug-resistant outbreaks such as bird flu, swine flu, and many other germs or superbugs found in hospitals around the planet. 

As the world’s biggest consumer of meat, there are increasing number of Americans who have took notice of the use of antibiotics in meat.  Supermarkets and meat production companies have labeled their products with antibiotic-free meat, while sales of drugs-free meat has gone up 25% to $175 million in the past three years, as reported by Matthew Perrone of Associated Press.
