A team of researchers led by Julián Cristia of Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) found an American charity and its sponsors’ efforts of giving a child a computer does not seem to do much. The program called the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) and began delivering thousands of affordable computers laptops to students around the world especially sending to developing countries in 2007.
Using samples from Peru, the report conducted by Cristia et al. found that children receiving the computers remained lack of math or reading skills. The report with a title “Technology and Child Development: Evidence from the One Laptop per Child Program” was published by IDB recently. Researchers did not find any signs of getting a laptop would also motivate Peruvian kids to do their homework or spend more time to read books. Cristia et al. praised the local government for giving poor students access to laptops as only about 25% people in Peru had a computer in 2010. The report also suggested that local government must develop curriculum to help teachers and train them better in the way using technology to expand students’ skills.
