The IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics released its annual report for top-25 best-selling prescription drugs in America for year 2010. Lipitor was at number one which captured $7.2 billion sales. Lipitor is being used to decrease the amount of cholesterol in adults. Sales for this cholesterol drug for have dropped about 5% compared to the previous one year. Within the past five years, sales decreased about 16%. While it continued to drop in sales during the past five years, Lipitor remains a top seller drug in America.
Nexium, the purple pill from AstraZeneca, was at number two. This drug generated $6.3 billion in sales in 2010. The purple pill is being used to treat acid from stomach causing heartburn.
Plavix was at number three. This drug is used to prevent strokes and heart attacks. In 2010, this drug gained a total of $6.1 billion in sales, compared to the previous one year, sales has increased about 9%. Within the past five years, sales have increased about 110%.
The number four most popular drug for year 2010 was Advair Diskus which is being used to treat asthma. This drug captured $4.7 billion in sales in 2010.
At number five was Abilify with total sales of $4.6 billion during 2010. This drug helps to cure mental illness caused irregular thinking and causing less interest in life.
