For almost a half-century, Corning Inc. could not find how to make money of the 1962’s invention. The invention, an ultra-strong glass formula, dubbed as ‘Gorilla Glass,’ has been sitting and collecting dust at Corning’s research lab.
The advantage of Gorilla is that this type of glass is very hard to break (about two to three times stronger than regular glass) and scratch free. As more mobile gadgets, mobile devices, smartphones, and flat-screen TVs run on touch-screen, the demand for ultra-strong glass is suddenly increasing from technology companies.
According to AP News, Gorilla Glass only generated $170 million in 2008. However, industry experts predict that Gorilla Glass market could hit multibillion-dollar in the next several years.
