Website address which ends with .com remains the world’s most popular Top-Level Domain (TLD). As of the end of March 2012, over 100 million .com domain names have been registered and are being in active use in the world, as per data provided by VeriSign. The two popular domain extensions, .com and .net, has reached a total of 116.7 million domain names in the first quarter of 2012. When comparing the total active web addresses between Q1-2012 versus Q4-2011, the total active has increased about 2.5 percent. When comparing Q1-2012 versus Q1-2011, the growth rate was at 8.1 percent.
According to VeriSign, the web service company recorded over 233 million domain names in Q1-2012 among all Top-Level Domain (TLD). Compared to Q4-2011, this was an increase of 7.5 million domain names, or an increase of 3.3 percent. When compared to Q1-2011, the number of domain name registration has increased by 23 million names, or an increase of 11 percent within the past one year span.
