Using a dataset of 13 billion URLs that run across businesses in Q1-2010, a study conducted by Network Box found that 6.8% of all Internet accessed by businesses went to Facebook. It appears that the popular social networking helps employees to burn time during business hours.
Moreover, Facebook also ate companies’ total bandwidth with taking 4.5% of all bandwidth used. The biggest chuck of internet bandwidth went to YouTube which ate up to 10% of all bandwidth used in businesses.
SC Magazine UK quoted Simon Heron, internet security analyst for Network Box, and wrote “The figures show that IT managers are right to be concerned about the amount of social network use at work. There are two real concerns here: firstly that employees will be downloading applications from social networks and putting security at risk; and secondly the amount of corporate bandwidth that appears to be being used for non-corporate activity.”
